Future City
Stover Middle School S.T.E.P. students, from left, Heather Fields, Destinee Wilson, Garret Louiselle and, not pictured, Remington Verts competed in the Future City Engineering Competition Saturday, Jan. 21 in Lawrence, Kan. The students had to design a virtual city and maintain it for 150 years, write a narrative about their city, write a research paper about energy, build a scale model of a portion of their city using recycled materials and give a presentation about their future city, Windigstadt. Fields, Wilson and Louiselle gave their presentation before three different panels of judges and then answered questions from them. One of their presentations was in an auditorium before an audience of approximately 200 people. The students won fifth place out of both Missouri and Kansas. "The students put an incredible amount of work into this project including researching, problem solving, decision making and budgeting," said S.T.E.P. sponsor Kim Buck. "They did an awesome job and I'm very proud of them." (submitted photo)

Save the FSA office
Versailles resident Ken McCutcheon, standing center, was one of several citizens who spoke out in favor of keeping the Morgan County Farm Service Agency office in Versailles open during a public meeting Tuesday night, Jan. 31 at the library in Versailles. The United States Department of Agriculture has listed the Versailles FSA office, along with 130 other offices nationwide, for closure in a consolidation proposal. The proposal must still be approved by congress before going into effect. See the related story in this week's Leader-Statesman. (photo by Bryan E. Jones)

FSA office defended
The possible closure of the Versailles office of the Farm Service Agency (FSA) due to budget cuts within the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) was likened to the “dismantling of rural America” by recently retired FSA Morgan County Executive Director Dennis Schad, who spoke against the closure Tuesday, Jan. 31 at a public meeting in Versailles.
