A benefit for local man Glenn Meyer will be held from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at the Pomme de Terre Shrine Club. Meyer was grievously injured on his Pittsburg property when a tree he and his son were cutting down fell on top him. The accident left him with serious injuries that required him to be life flighted to a Springfield Hospital.

Second annual sockhop raise over $500 for Wheatland Fire Department
The Wheatland Volunteer Fire Department held its second annual Sockhop Saturday, March 17, at the McCarty Senior Center in Wheatland. The evening began at 6 p.m. and ran until 11 p.m., and featured classic music from the 1950’s such as “Sixteen Candles,” by The Crests, “All Shook Up” by Elvis, tracks by Hank Williams and George Jones, and “Great Balls of Fire” by Jerry Lee Lewis.
The Friends of the Hickory County Library will be hosting a fundraiser dinner Sunday, March 25, at the McCarty Senior Center in Wheatland. The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with proceeds helping to pay for insurance at the Hickory County Library in Hermitage.
VFW celebrates St. Patrick’s Day- Galmey VFW celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by hosting a community party from 7:30-11:30 p.m. Saturday, March 17. A band called Roadside Attraction kept the crowd entertained and dancing to a variety of music from rock to county. Finger foods and snacks were set up on a table as refreshments. Cliff and Sandy Tarr were also celebrating their birthdays, and hired the band. “Happy St. Patrick’s Day, and hope everyone remains safe,” said VFW Commander Dale Buck.
DocuDrama planned at Wheatland for Safe and Sober Day, March 29
Wheatland High School will be participating in Safe and Sober Day Thursday, March 29. It is a day set aside during the school year that is focused on the importance of not drinking and driving, and the consequences of the choice to drink and drive.
Hickory County Health Department officials have announced that construction on the new building, located south of Hermitage on Highway 254, is making significant progress. As such, the health department office in Hermitage will officially close the week of Monday, April 30, through Friday, May 4, so staff can make the transfer. Services are scheduled to reopen in the new building on Monday, May 7.
Voters are reminded that Hickory County’s Municipal Election will take place in two weeks, on Tuesday, April 3, with a number of school board contests on the ballot, as well as two tax extension propositions. Detailed ballots are featured in this issue of The Index.

The annual Hickory County Agriculture Conference will be held Friday, March 23, beginning at 6 p.m. at the McCarty Senior Center in Wheatland.
